Geiger Memorial Fellowship
Through the generosity of the many friends and admirers of the late distinguished Franciscan priest, historian and archivist, Maynard J. Geiger, O.F.M., who died on May 13, 1977, the Board of Trustees of the Santa Barbara Mission Archive-Library has established an annual memorial fellowship. The purpose of the fellowship is to support scholarly research related to the American Southwest prior to 1846, with preferential consideration being given to studies relating to Alta and Baja California. The fellowship will be open to junior scholars who are beginning careers in an academic professional institution or field. Applicants should hold a Ph.D. degree or the equivalent in an appropriate discipline germane to their research interest and proposal. Consideration also will be given to outstanding graduate students in candidacy for the doctorate.
Those who wish to apply for the fellowship are asked to send a complete curriculum vitae (if in doctoral candidacy, also a complete graduate transcript), a detailed research proposal, a statement of significance of the project, as well as ultimate objectives, notably publication, and two or more letters of recommendation. The applicants and letters should be sent directly to the address given below. Research proposals must include use of the Santa Barbara Mission Archive-Library and its holdings. The fellowship, if awarded, includes a stipend of $2,500.00, and requires a four week residency at the Mission Archive-Library. The decision of the award committee is final.
