There are currently no internships available.

Past internship opportunities are described below. Please note that due to recent staffing transitions and the extended closure during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, internships have been delayed. Once SBMAL is ready to welcome back volunteers and interns, this webpage will be updated. 

 

SBMAL supports partnerships with local high schools, colleges, and universities for students to obtain school credit for their work at the Archive-Library. Email collections@sbmal.org to find out more about obtaining credit for work. 

Summer 2019 Internship in Digital Humanities

Designed for current students interested in digital humanities, archives, public history, museums, and/or libraries and information science. This internship provides training and experience in archival best practices, metadata, photograph collections, and digital collections management platforms. Gain valuable hands-on experience in a research archives setting at the Santa Barbara Mission Archive-Library. 

 

UCSB Classics Internship

Designed for all Classics majors at UCSB, this internship provides training in archival best practices, collection curation, and digitization of documents in the collections related to the study of Classics. Gain experience in a professional setting at the Queen of the Missions.

Geiger Internship

The Santa Bárbara Mission Archive-Library is pleased to offer a paid internship in honor of the late distinguished Franciscan priest, historian, and archivist, Maynard J. Geiger, O.F.M., who died on May 13, 1977. The purpose of the internship is to support new research and/or experience working in an archive.

 

The internship is intended for students considering further studies or a career in public history, art history, library and information science, archives management, or museum studies. Students who would like the internship to fund their research at the Archive-Library must submit a research proposal. 

 

Interested applicants are asked to send their curriculum vitae, a letter of introduction explaining their areas of interest (or research proposal), and two letters of recommendation from current or past faculty members.

 

Spring Internship: The internship, if awarded, includes a stipend of $1000 over a period of 9 weeks from April 3 to June 9 at the Archive-Library. The decision of the award committee is final. Spring interns are eligible to apply for the summer internship. Application now closed.

Summer Internship: The internship, if awarded, includes a stipend of $1,500 over a period of 8 weeks (20 hours a week) at the Mission Archive-Library. The decision of the award committee is final. Application now closed.

Museum Internship

The Santa Bárbara Mission Archive-Library is pleased to partner with Old Mission Santa Barbara to offer a paid internship. The purpose of the internship is to gain experience working in an archive and museum, and to support the installation of new exhibits with research and writing. Applicants should be familiar with topics such as Chumash history, California Mission history, and 19th-century California history, as well as local ecology. 

The internship includes a stipend of $1,500 over a period of three months (about 8 hours per week). Interested applicants should send their curriculum vitae, a letter of introduction, and two letters of recommendation. SBMAL is open to researchers by appointment only.
Research hours are available on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, 10:00am to 4:00pm.
